  Summer Trees and Castle Ruins

In case people get tired of the snow, here are some photos I took last summer. As usual, there's a castle in there somewhere. *grin*

Krukenburg, gate

The pictures show the Krukenburg at the Weser. The last time I'd been there with my parents was a week before my mother's fatal accident, and it took a few years to be able and go back.

Keep (left) and chapel (right)

I didn't have a digital camera of my own last time, so there have been few photos in the old posts. But this time I got a collection of my own shots to 'decorate' a post or two.

Chapel, and the so-called Paderborn House (left)

The interesting feature of the Krukenburg is that it started out as a rather large chapel which then was fortified by the addition of a castle. Usually, castles only had a small, single room chapel tucked away somewhere in the keep or palace.

Chapel seen from the inside

You can see that even the remains of the - originally cross-shaped - chapel are larger than the palace building.

Paderborn House

The Paderborn House which served as palas, was the main building in the castle besides the keep. It once was a representative house, fit to host a bishop should he visit the Krukenburg.

The bailey in the evening sun

The keep which is accessible by a staircase all the way to the top, was closed this time, so there are unfortunately no photos from above . But I might go back some day.

Comments:
Your pics are so much better than mine. I can hear the foliage rustle and the cinnamon-pepper scent of the greenery in the setting sun, the crackle of long vanished fat from whole animals roasting in oak, maple, and cherrywood stuffed fire places and the echos in time of monks singing plainsong at mass.
In mine, you can only hear "dooooh, hit my xxxxxing head on the low arch again!!!!! and is that ANOTHER pebble in my shoe?

Lovely photos, Gabriele - very atmospheric. I love that circular keep!

Thankyou for such gorgeous photos of castles, and sun, and blue skies, and green garss and trees! A very welcome antidote to the snow! :-)

Your photos are gateways to imagination and longing...

Stag, your photos aren't bad.

Thank you, Satima, Jules and Bernita.

Fantastic pictures, as usual. You're so lucky you get to visit all these places.

I so want to use that first archway as a plot bunny . . .

Love the pics. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Meghan.

Erin, I'm sure there were plotbunnies hiding in the bushes. :)

Lovely photos. How interesting that it started as a chapel and then acquired a castle - is there a story behind that?

Carla, the Krukenberg obviously had been a place of worship already in pagan times, and those always attracted the missionaries. It's difficult to find traces of wooden buildings, as you know, but there may have been a wooden chapel long before the stone version was built. A place with a long tradition, that's sure.

So very righteous. Thank you for this blog!

What a lovely place, and great to see the green - I'm well and truly sick of snow, ice and slush now. ;)

Alianore, I don't mind the snow, but I could do without the slush we got right now.
